The Australian Business Deans Council ranking of business, economics, management, finance, accounting, and marketing journals — A* world-leading down to C recognized. 243 of these journals are in our catalog with full metrics.
What is the ABDC Journal Quality List?
The ABDC Journal Quality List is the gold-standard ranking for business academic research. Maintained by the Australian Business Deans Council — the peak body of Australia's 39 university business schools — it has been published since 2007 and is reviewed every 3-5 years. The current list contains 2,600+ titles across business, economics, management, finance, accounting, marketing, information systems, operations, and related disciplines.
Each journal is assigned one of four tiers based on independent panel evaluation:
- A* — World-leading. Top ~6% of the list. The strongest signal of research impact.
- A — High quality. Internationally recognized, frequently cited.
- B — Well-regarded. Solid regional / specialty reach.
- C — Recognized. Peer-reviewed, meets the basic quality threshold.

Australian / NZ business school faculty
Promotion + tenure scored on A*/A publications. ARC Discovery grants weight A* journals heavily.
Indian B-schools (IIM, XLRI, ISB, etc.)
AICTE and UGC accept ABDC as an alternative quality signal alongside Scopus. NIRF rankings reward ABDC pubs.
SE Asian business schools
NUS, NTU, SMU (Singapore), UM (Malaysia), and Indonesian PTKI use ABDC for hiring and promotion.
PhD students & ECRs
Top placements require at least one A or A* publication from the dissertation pipeline.

FAQ — ABDC ratings explained
What does an ABDC A* rating mean?
An A* rating is awarded to the top journals in each field — the 'world-leading' tier. About 6% of the list earns this status. Examples: Academy of Management Journal, American Economic Review, Journal of Finance, Administrative Science Quarterly. Publishing here is the strongest credential a business researcher can hold.
How often is the ABDC list updated?
Full revisions happen every 3-5 years. The list has been updated in 2010, 2013, 2016, 2019, 2022, and 2025. Minor corrections may be issued in between.
Is ABDC accepted by UGC CARE / NAAC in India?
ABDC is not formally part of UGC CARE, but Indian B-schools (IIM, XLRI, ISB) and AICTE-affiliated programs treat ABDC A* / A as equivalent to Scopus + Web of Science publications for promotion and NIRF scoring. Most ABDC A* / A journals are also Scopus-indexed, so they tend to qualify for UGC CARE Group II automatically.
ABDC vs Scopus / Web of Science
Scopus and WoS are indexing databases — they verify the journal exists and is peer-reviewed. ABDC is a qualitative ranking by an expert panel, specifically for business and economics. A journal can be Scopus-indexed but not ABDC-rated (because it's outside business), or vice versa. The two signals complement each other.
