Base Data on Thematic Maps

Abstract

Base data on thematic maps are generally perceived as locational elements applied merely to accord with individual map makers' sense of design. But map purpose should be as much of a criterion as design in base-data selection. This paper develops operational definitions for internal and external base data, as they may be used by cartographers and interpreted by map readers, and discusses base-data use and abuse.
